Three Retirement Alternatives to Social Security

By Brian Eller, on Thursday, July 17, 2025

I recently alerted you to some distressing news:

Social Security is at risk of running out of money in just eight years.

To protect yourself, you’ll need new sources of income.

Today, I’ll show you three alternatives you can tap into — starting with as little as $100.

A New Plan

First, though, a quick reminder:

As reported by CNBC, Social Security’s days are numbered.

By 2033, this pool of capital could dry up, leaving roughly 70 million Americans — perhaps including you — without a key source of income.

The situation may seem hopeless. But as I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, all hope isn’t lost. You just need to find some alternative sources of income.

The thing is, you’ll find plenty in the private markets — including three I’ll show you today.

No. 1: Real Estate

Real estate can be a great way to generate income. But maybe not in the way you think.

Sure, you could buy a rental property. But then you’d need to deal with all the hassles of being a landlord, including the “three T’s”: tenants, toilets, and trash.

But now there’s a better alternative: real-estate crowdfunding.

With this approach, you contribute small amounts of money — $10 here, $100 there — into private real-estate projects. These range from fractional shares in a portfolio of rental properties, to investing in construction loans that pay set interest rates.

Such projects offer the chance to earn annualized returns of 8%, 10%, 12%, and even more.

Opportunity No. 2: Music Royalties

Ever wonder how rock stars get rich?

Sure, they can make a fortune touring the world...

But they also make gobs of money from royalties. Simply put, any time an artist’s song is played or streamed, they earn a royalty payment based on the rights to that music.

Here’s where things get interesting: artists sometimes sell these rights.

For example, Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks recently put their rights up for sale.

So did Justin Bieber, Dr. Dre, Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Tedder, Justin Timberlake, Tina Turner, John Legend, Neil Young, Shakira, and Chrissie Hynde.

And through a new type of investment platform, investors like you can buy them. And once you do, you’ll earn royalties — steady income! — every time their songs are played.

This is a little-known way to earn returns that reach well into the double digits.

Opportunity No. 3: Private Credit

In the 1980s, big insurance companies started lending money directly to companies.

This was the beginning of what’s called private credit — a form of lending that’s outside the traditional banking system.

Essentially, lenders negotiate directly with borrowers. Such lenders include insurance companies, private-equity firms, even individuals like you and me.

This is a fast-growing market. In 2015, it was valued at around $500 billion. Today, it’s valued at $1.7 trillion.

Major investment companies like BlackRock, KKR, and Goldman Sachs have jumped in. And through new types of investment funds, you can join them. Minimums can be as little as a few hundred dollars, and like music royalties, returns can reach well into the double digits.

No Expertise or Deep Pockets Necessary

With these opportunities, there’s no need to be an expert in real-estate, music, or private credit. And there’s no need to be a wealthy, accredited investor, either.

Minimum investments are generally around $100, and one real-estate platform has a minimum of just $10.
